VENUE
The venue for the Te Wao Whanau Reunion is Tutanekai Marae, Hinemoa
Point, Rotorua.
In November 2003 Tutanekai marae was gutted by arson of which the culprits
were never caught. Jim Shuster (Historic Places Trust's Maori Heritage Advisor), lead the entire restoration process.
In January 2004 preparation work to restore the tukutuku panels and carvings began. Tutanekai was officially reopened on Saturday
3rd June, 2006.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
Why are we having a Reunion at this marae and not
in Te Puke or Rotoiti?
-
A neutral venue was initially requested to ensure our whanau actively
engage in this reunion
-
Other venues were investigated and were very expensive to hire
-
Tutanekai marae was offered by Rosie Te Wao and the initial fee ($1,000)
for this marae will be paid by Peri & Karen Te Wao. This marae is also next to the resting place of Manu Te Wao,
(the eldest of Peri & Pareheuea's children).
